We decided to get married in Copenhagen because it was a whole lot easier than getting married in Germany. If you have an international wedding in Germany, the bureaucratic paper work is not only challenging but also expensive. Copenhagen required a lot less and therefore we chose the easy and relaxed way to get married.
After a little bit of research on the Copenhagen City Hall website, we submitted the following documents online: passports, valid visa, married status (which is Meldebescheinigung in German)
We also submitted an application, decided on a wedding date and paid a city hall fee of €70. About three weeks later we got confirmation about the paper and our wedding day. We were ready to book the flights and our accommodation.
We left three days before the wedding and enjoyed exploring the city since it was our first trip to Copenhagen. We were very limited on carry-on luggage since it had to fit two wedding outfits and EasyJet has pretty strict policies. We avoided the risk of lost luggage and therefore didn’t want to check anything important for the wedding.
Two entire wedding outfits nicely packed in my big backpack!
The day before the wedding we had to hand in our original documents at City Hall. After the longest 30 minutes of my life everything was finally confirmed and we were all set for the big day.
In the afternoon I made a quick detour to find a flower shop and get some flowers for my bouquet. My original idea was to bring a bouquet designed by my favorite florist in Berlin but since our carry-on luggage was maxed out there was no way I could bring the flowers as well. But since I spent a little time earlier this summer making flower bouquets myself, I actually had a lot of fun doing my own wedding bouquet.
Our original plan was to elope and surprise our friends & families. During the last three years of our engagement we have really tried to plan every possible wedding scenario in Germany and/or the US but we just couldn’t figure it out. It just seemed right for us to do it alone. Little did I know that my husband had secretly invited my parents and my sister and her husband.
Here are some pictures from our lovely day, beautifully captured by my dear friend Leonie.
